No sexy roles for Victor Silayan for now

MANILA, Philippines –There’s one question that can easily make budding actor Victor Silayan blush, stammer and break into a nervous laugh: Are you willing to play a macho dancer?

“Ayoko munang isipin yang mga ganyan kasi, ehrm, may limitation ako based sa values ko as person and Chirstian pero…yun bang kung marami ka naman sigurong matututunan sa ganong roles...pero as for me, it’s questionable that I’ll do it at this point,” he said looking very uncomfortable, much to the amusement of the press during the huddle for TV5’s “Glamorosa” held Jan. 10.

Then again, it’s plain to see why such a question was thrown at him. Since modeling for a clothing brand in just his underwear, the tall and slim Victor has been the object of many girls’ and gays’ fantasies.

“Pero ang concept naman kasi nun ay a man wearing underwear so walang malisya. At saka I was showing off a Muay Thai pose dun sa picture. Kaya nga nakataas yung isang paa ko,” he explained.

The grandson of the late actor Vic Silayan and nephew of actress Chat Silayan, great things are expected from Victor who plays Stefano Lustico on “Glamorosa.” Signed with TV5 for three years, he is being built up as a versatile actor; one who can play dark roles and not just the handsome leading man that his looks and build predispose him to.

Surprisingly, though, Victor has no grand plans as far as his career in showbiz goes. Though he is serious with his craft, he isn’t thinking long term. All he wants is to tackle every role given to him in the best way possible.

“Sometimes I even think of texting people to ask for their opinion about my characterization. I mean, I have my own take on how to do it but I’m thinking ‘Should I make my character masamang-masama or alalay lang para medyo lovable pa din sa tao?’” he mused aloud.

Victor continued: “At na-cha-challenge talaga ako sa role ko sa ‘Glamorosa.’ Kasi medyo masama yung character ko dun eh sa totoong buhay, bihira ako magalit, if at all. I’m the type who’d just understand and forgive a person.”

A hands-on type of guy, Victor doesn’t have a personal assistant, not even a driver. He carries his own clothes to the set, drives himself to location shoots, and comes out much wiser from doing so.

“Iba kasi ‘yung napagdadaanan mo lahat,” he quipped.

The decision to be this independent becomes even more impressive considering that he has not given up schooling. Victor is an Economics and Applied Corporate Management student at De La Salle University. He is also into mixed martial arts (Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Judo), painting, sculpting, photography and music.

Victor is working on his Tagalog in preparation for meatier roles. He thinks he’s getting good at it “pwera lang yung mga malalalim na na Tagalog, yun bang Tagalog nung sinauna? I still think I sound unnatural whenever I speak that way.”

Asked if he’s willing to play gay roles, Victor hedged, “Siguro kung comedy pwede…”

How about a kissing scene with another man?

There goes that nervous laugh again.

(‘Glamorosa’ airs weeknights on TV5 after ‘Wiltime Bigtime.’ The series also features young stars Ritz Asul, Martin Escudero and Meg Imperial)
