Speaking at a function here, Ms. Sharma said problems start when we treat it as negative. “Boys pass comments about girls, terming them sexy. But sexy means beautiful and charming. We should not see it in a negative sense,” she said at the function organised by a women's organisation.

Soon after the programme, the BJP criticised Ms. Sharma and accused her of promoting eve-teasing by giving such statements.

BJP's State vice-president Suman Sharma said, “it is shameful that a woman who holds a responsible position at the national level has such thoughts about women.”

“Her comments are demoralising for women and she should be removed from the NCW immediately,” she said.

I think Mamta Sharma is correct. The word "sexy" has nothing to do with sex. As she says, it only means "beautiful", "attractive", "very good" and so on to a superlative degree. In any language usage changes the connotation. For example, "cool" does not mean low temperature. It again means "good", etc.

The word sexy may have become commonplace among Boys and Girls. But, the main problem is -many Girls do want to dress in sexy dresses - to attract Boys. Either intentionally or unintentionally, they do raise thoughts and ideas in the Boys. Dress in public Places must be decent and dignified and should not be SEXY - in such connotation. If dresses of Girls are purposefully made, to raise ideas of sex in Boys, it is not good for either the boys or the girls. What is being shown in movies, is doing such damage already - leading to rapes and eve-teasing of helpless, innocent Girls, by people whose minds are spoiled by the outrageous dresses and behaviours on silver screen.

I think Mamata Sharma and Mohanraj are correct if dictionary meaning is taken. However certain words though English when used in our country has different meaning on account of its long currency of that understanding. So Mamata Sharma should have explained the whole story. However it is not correct to term certain actions as " just between boys and girls as tamash", because it amounts to encouraging a culture that is alien. The boy/girl friend system or culture is most unIndian. All can be friends. Those who are in love are finace and finacee. Let us not imitate western culture intoto.

NCW chief's 'sexy' comment sparks a row

NCW chief's 'sexy' comment sparks a row - Times Of India You are here: Home>CollectionsNCW chief's 'sexy' comment sparks a rowPTI Feb 25, 2012, 10.11PM ISTTags:Women|NCW Chairperson's Controversial Remarks

JAIPUR: NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma today said the word "sexy" should not be taken in a negative context as it means "beautiful and charming", but her argument did not go down well with the BJP and women's organisations which termed her remark as shocking and demoralising for women.

Speaking at a function here, Mamta said that the word meant 'beautiful' and 'charming' so it should not be taken in negative sense because problems start when we treat it as negative. "Boys pass comments on girls terming them sexy but sexy means beautiful and charming. We should not see it in negative sense," she said in the function held by a woman organisation.

Soon after the programme, BJP criticised Sharma and accused her of promoting eve-teasing by giving such statements. "It is shameful that a woman who holds a responsible position at national level has such thoughts for women," Suman Sharma, BJP's state Vice President, said.

"Her comments are demoralising for women in the country and she should be removed from the NCW immediately if Congress is sensitive towards the feelings of women," she said. Sharma said that it was very unfortunate that NCW chairperson instead of protecting the interest of women was talking in such a objectionable manner.

When contacted, Mamta Sharma said her comments should be taken in "positive sense" instead of highlighting as a "negative comment". "I was positive in my approach so I said that sexy means beautiful. One should take it in positive sense," the chairperson said. Women organisations also condemned Sharma's statement. "It is shocking that Sharma is commenting on how women and girls should receive the word 'Sexy'. We are outraged and shocked at by what she has said. "It is unfortunate," said the women organisations in a joint statement.
