Study: Two-thirds of young girls want to be "sexy"

Girls as young as six years old, wanting to be sexy? It's part of an eye-opening study into what girls think of themselves.

The study used these paper dolls and asked girls to choose which one they looked like, how they wanted to look, and which doll was the popular girl in school.

Moms we spoke with say they weren't that surprised with the results.

When shown these two paper dolls, 68 percent of girls 6 to 9 years old said they wanted to look like the one on the left, or the "sexy" doll.

"The age group of that study is really shocking, I would have thought they were older girls," says Jill Parish, mother of a 9 year old.

The numbers are part of a study recently published in a journal called Sex Roles.

"My initial thoughts are media keeps playing a part in showing young girls and women have to be shown a certain way to be accepted in society, unfortunately it's the smaller the outfit the better," says mother Kay Pace.

Media's not all to blame, but according to the study, girls who watched a lot of TV and movies and who had mothers who were very concerned about their clothing and appearance were more likely to say the sexy doll was popular.

"And you see kids walking home from the high schools and middle schools and that's what they're wearing," says Parish.

On the other hand, mothers who used TV and movies as teaching moments about bad behavior and unrealistic scenarios were less likely to have daughters who said they looked like the sexy doll.

11-year old Lilly Pace says she's not surprised by the study either.

"All those like dumb pop stars, they all wear that and they think I want to be Madonna when it's ridiculous," says Lilly Pace.

"Go inside target and look what Barbie looks like for 6 to 9 year olds. Right now that's how Barbie's dressed, that's how those dolls are dressed, that's the accessories they come with," says Pace.

"I feel fortunate my kids go to a school where there are uniforms. That helps a bit but they still see the images everywhere," says Parish.

72-percent of the girls said the sexy doll was more popular than the non-sexy doll.

Researchers say it's possible girls want to look that way because they think sexiness leads to popularity.

A new study published this month in the journal, Sex Roles, reveals young girls, some six-years-old, want to be sexy.

Researchers determined this by asking girls to pick a paper doll they wanted thought looked like them and wanted to look like. The doll chosen most was the one wearing tight and revealing, sexy clothes.

Mothers News13 talked with Tuesday were surprised to hear about the study’s results.

“I definitely see that in our society,” said Elizabeth Fuson, a mother to an 11-year-old girl. “That younger girls are trying to act older and dress older and appear sexy."

But to a veteran family therapist, this is not a new concept.

"We've always known that girls want to look like the girls on the magazine covers. They want to look like the girls they're seeing on television,” said Melody Brooke. “It seems sexy to us because we recognize that as being about sex. The six year old does not know what it's about. They just know that's the look."

The images of sex appeal are apparent at dance competitions in the costumes and dance moves the young girls perform. But News13 wanted to see if the girls thought what they were wearing or doing was sexy.

When we asked nine-year-old Jasmine, who is competing this week at a dance competition, if she knew what sexy is, she said no and could not even guess at a definition.

Eleven-year-old Zoe also had no idea and shook her head as a response.

The study did find that girls that participate in dance or other sporting activities were less likely to choose the sexy paper doll.

"They're probably not watching as much television; not spending as much time online,” said Brooke. “What they're seeing in their daily lives is going to be what they're going to be more looking for."

"I'm glad mine don't really know [what sexy is],” said Robin Reese. “That makes me really happy."

Brooke said she believes the study opens up an opportunity for parents to sit down and discuss what age appropriate for their child is.

A new study suggests girls as young as six years old are finding value in appearing sexy.

Researchers at Knox College in Illinois used paper dolls in a study of six to nine-year old girls. They asked the girls which dolls they wanted to play with or look like and the majority chose a more scantily clad doll most often.

Seventy-two percent of the girls also figured the "sexier" doll would be more popular than a doll that was slightly more covered up.

Interestingly, girls who were involved in a dance studio chose the non-sexualized doll more often. Researchers say dance and other sports may be associated with a better body image in females.

There's an unsettling new trend among young girls. A new study found that girls as young as six want to be sexy.

Many people blame the television shows, magazines and today's role models. While this study highlighted some of those ideas, it also pinpointed something new.

It identified the self-sexualization in young girls.

Tiffany Jackson says when it's time for her girls to tone it down, Diamond and Genesis do just that.

"The only time I am sexy is when I am doing a job modeling," Diamond said.

But it's "the sexy" that's intriguing to almost every girl - even young as six.

Psychologists at Knox College presented 6 to 9 year old girls with two images - a sexy doll and another with looser clothing.

Most girls choose the sexy doll because, the study says, it's how they looked or wanted to look and because she seemed "most popular."

"We do see images of perfect women and I think it does impact self esteem as parents we need to learn to counteract that," said Pamela Hayford, of Southwest Florida Parent and Child Magazine.

The study attributed the young girls' choices to media, religion and their moms.

"If they see mom emulating an image they do it themselves," said Hayford.

And while things like cheering, dancing and pageants sometimes come into question - the study found in many instances it could increase self esteem.

According to the study, parents who talked to their kids about inappropriate ads found their girls were less likely to relate to the sexy doll.

(RTTNews.com) - A long-running complaint from parents is that their daughters are dressing too sexy. Well, a new study shows they might be right, and that the racy clothing might make sex an issue for young girls too early in life.

A study done at Kenyon College in Ohio said that as much as 30 percent of clothing available online to young girls in the U.S. is sexualizing. Researchers added that this leads to the issue of sex being brought to the forefront at a young age.

Researchers analyzed more than 5,600 clothing items and only 69 percent had childlike characteristics. Meanwhile, 25 percent had both sexualizing and childlike features and 4 percent had neither. Only 4 percent were only considered sexualizing.

"Confused parents might be persuaded to buy the leopard-print miniskirt if it's bright pink," study authors said. "Clearly, sexiness is still visible beneath the bows or tie-dye colors. We propose that dressing girls in this way could contribute to socializing them into the narrow role of the sexually objectified woman."

(RTTNews.com) - A long-running complaint from parents is that their daughters are dressing too sexy. Well, a new study shows they might be right, and that the racy clothing might make sex an issue for young girls too early in life.

A study done at Kenyon College in Ohio said that as much as 30 percent of clothing available online to young girls in the U.S. is sexualizing. Researchers added that this leads to the issue of sex being brought to the forefront at a young age.

Researchers analyzed more than 5,600 clothing items and only 69 percent had childlike characteristics. Meanwhile, 25 percent had both sexualizing and childlike features and 4 percent had neither. Only 4 percent were only considered sexualizing.

"Confused parents might be persuaded to buy the leopard-print miniskirt if it's bright pink," study authors said. "Clearly, sexiness is still visible beneath the bows or tie-dye colors. We propose that dressing girls in this way could contribute to socializing them into the narrow role of the sexually objectified woman."
