Make waves with sexy surf hair

Whether you’ll be catching waves on a beach or causing a splash in the city this summer, nothing screams effortlessly cool like surfer girl hair.

Channel your inner water babe with sun-kissed golden locks and a sexy tousled mane a la Gossip Girl star Blake Lively and ride this summer’s coolest trend.

The slightly undone look is perfect for all of the hot season’s outdoor activities like festivals and garden parties - and takes all but five minutes to create.

For beachy hair in its purest form, simply spritz damp hair with surf spray, like Fekkai Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray and leave it to dry naturally. Scrunch your locks every now and again to achieve a tousled effect.

If you want to recreate Blake Lively’s voluminous waves, you need to turn up the heat.

“Tong hair in medium sections around a large barrelled tong, winding the hair away from your face,” Peter Lux, creative beauty director at Head & Shoulders told British magazine Company. “Spritz it with a little texturising spray, then massage your head with your fingers - this breaks up the waves so they look more undone.”

For a sportier look that is ideal for camping out at a festival or bracing the elements on a beach, sweep the top half of your hair away from your face and slick it back with a little texturising paste, like Tigi’s Bed Head Hard To Get.

Starting as close to the crown of your head as you like, braid your locks into thin mini-plaits for a surfer girl worthy look.

“Just make sure you spritz your hair and head with a UV protection spray, because your scalp is quite exposed with this look and there’s nothing worse than a sunburned, flaking scalp!” Peter added. Try out Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essential Scalp Drops to protect your crowning glory.

For perfect wave-rider colour, ask your hairdresser to lighten your tresses a couple of shades around your face and on the lengths of your locks.

“Surfer girls often tie their hair up in a messy top-knot. This means the sun lightens the front of their hair and the ends, so they get a gorgeous graduated effect,” A-List colourist Josh Wood explained to Company.

Surf’s up!
