Mocha Girls perform "Pinay Ako"
MANILA, Philippines – Sexy all-female group Mocha Girls said that Filipinos should be proud of performers who wear the Philippine flag as an outfit, as this is a symbol of national pride and is not disrespectful towards the tri-color identity of the country.
The Mocha Girls, in their new music video for the song “Pinay Ako,” will be shown wearing outfits inspired by the Philippine flag. Lead performer Mocha Uson said their flag-inspired get-up symbolizes being a “modern Filipina.”
“’Yung aming concept kasi is being proud as a Filipina and siguro ang pinakamagandang simbulo po nu'n is ‘yung flag ng Philippines, kaya proud po kami na binabandera namin 'yung bandila natin,” Uson said in a press interview for their new album.
“And sa tingin ko kami ‘yung modern Filipina, ‘yun bang matapang, open-minded, wise, tapos may sariling pagiisip. ‘Yun 'yung modern Filipina.”
Uson also said that the girl group does not want to offend anyone. On the contrary, featuring the flag in the music video is a way of making it “international.”
This is also the group’s way of making a connection with Filipinos abroad, as the music video is also intended for international release.
On the possibility of clashing with nationalist organizations and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Uson said this is merely the group’s way of promoting the country.
“Bakit naman natin ipagdadamot ang flag? Pilipino rin kami, amin rin naman ‘yan. Dito kami pinanganak and dapat nga proud tayo kung sino man gagamit ng Philippine flag para maingat ‘yung bansa, being Pinay.”
The group’s advocacy of “being Pinay,” Uson re-affirmed, will be the central theme of the music video.
“Proud lang po kami na gamitin ito (Philippine flag) sa song namin na ‘Pinay Ako’ to represent all the Filipinas around the world,” Uson said.
