MANILA ? Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Sonny Coloma on Tuesday expressed concern over sexy girls wearing bikinis who dance to their heart?s content during live television game shows.
The PCOO chief at the same time asked the state-owned and private media to uphold women?s rights.
Coloma said this during a forum entitled ?Media and Gender Equality Committee Media Consultation? at the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) main office in Diliman, Quezon City.
The PCOO chief said government and the media should be partners in protecting women?s right through self-censorship and refraining from showing images of scantily clothed women, limiting air time of dancing ladies in sexy appearance and humiliating the "not-so-pretty" girls.
Coloma, who gave the opening remarks, notes the gender issues in the portrayal of women in media such as advertisements, movie trailers of violent movies, sexist language, coverage of rape cases and other crimes.
Highlight of the forum was the presentation of three documents on gender sensitivity by the convenors to Coloma, who heads the Media and Gender Equality Committee. Leading the presentation was Atty. Ann Marie Nemenzo of Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
These documents are Code of Ethics for Media, Gender Equality Guide and Guidelines to Protect the Portrayal of Women and Film.
A panel discussion followed. Panelists were Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) chairperson Remedios Rikken, PCOO Assistant Secretary Lesley Jeanne Cordero, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) legal counsel Rudolph Jularbal and Women?s Feature Service (WFS) executive director Olivia H. Tripon.
Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Planning and Communications director Ms. Betty Lou Peñera presented the plaques of appreciation to participants while MTRCB chairman Grace Poe-Llamanzares gave the closing remarks. (PNA)
