TV press tour: Sexy 'naughty' humor to continue on '2 Broke Girls'

When the CBS sitcom, "2 Broke Girls," debuted in September, it immediately generated big ratings and garnered mostly favorable reviews. Lately, however, it has come under fire for the depiction of its supporting male characters -- viewed by many as racist, one-dimensional and crude.
But in a tense and testy press tour session with critics, the show's executive producer, Michael Patrick King, made it clear that he doesn't agree.
"This is a big, ballsy comedy that has a bigger heart than it has balls," he proclaimed. "It is broad and brash and very current."
On the claim that the male characters, including a black and Asian, lack dimension, he said, "I don't think the characters were one-note. I thought the characters were first note," before going on to explain that they will be fleshed out as the show continues and that the lead female characters -- played by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs -- were his first priority.
"It's called '2 Broke Girls.' Our main job is to take care of the girls," he said. "The other characters will grow and grow and grow, as they do on ensembles."
As for the show's vagina jokes and generally bawdy humor, King, who created, "Sex and the City," has no plans to back off. He lectured the critics on how it's a different TV world these days ('it's not 1994").
King used the terms "classy-dirty" and "high low-brow" to describe the show's brand of comedy and pointed out that more viewers are
embracing it rather than fleeing from it, as the ratings attest."I think everyone likes a good naughty joke," he said.
